Things Are Fine and Something Still Doesn't Fit

The CV looks reasonable, the flat is fine, and people would say your life is going well. You still catch yourself wondering whose expectations you are meeting.

This is psychological therapy for people without a crisis or a diagnosis who want to understand their patterns and choices. Sessions use CBT and ACT and are structured. I do not do goal-setting or accountability coaching.

Signs it may be worth looking properly

  • Choosing options because they sound sensible, then feeling flat once you have them

  • Answering "what do you want?" with what you think you ought to want

  • Holding a career or relationship pattern set at 22 that nobody has revisited since

  • Repeating the same situation across several jobs or relationships

  • Going quiet when someone asks what you enjoy

  • Feeling like a different person at work, with family and with friends

  • Envying people who seem certain

Where unexamined rules come from

Family, culture and early success in a narrow area hand out rules: stability comes first, don't be selfish, never look unsure. These can run for decades without being questioned. Some fit perfectly well. Trouble arrives when the rulebook and what matters to you point in different directions.

Values and goals are different things. A goal is a destination and can be reached or lost. A value is a direction, such as "being useful" or "being curious", and survives a change of goals. Knowing which is which makes decisions easier.

None of this suggests something is wrong with you. It is the ordinary business of finding out what you are working from.

What sessions involve

  • Writing down the rules you live by and tracing where each came from

  • Testing each one: does it still belong to you?

  • Clarifying your values through concrete examples, such as the days that felt right and what they contained

  • Small experiments, such as changing one habit or saying one unpopular preference, and observing the effect on mood and energy

  • Looking at the decisions you keep postponing and what postponing protects

  • Practising mild disagreement with expectations, in low-stakes places first

How I tend to work with this

ACT gives the frame: clarifying values and acting on them in specific, observable ways. CBT examines particular assumptions ("if I choose this, I'm being selfish") and tests them. Mindfulness supports noticing choices as they happen. Everything rests on a formulation of your own pattern, which is what separates it from coaching.

Why this counts as a reason to see a therapist

A diagnosis is not a requirement. You can have patterns worth understanding while functioning well, and looking at them before they become a problem tends to be cheaper for everyone.

Sometimes the "supposed to" voice is really harsh self-criticism. Questions about direction also often arrive during a move, a career change or an ending. And if the same dynamic keeps appearing with different people, the relationship difficulties page is relevant.
